FARMERS MARKET UPDATE, 6.27.24

This time last year we were still awaiting the onslaught of peaches due to the rains we experienced that delayed and crippled the crops.  This year we’re swimming in peach fuzz and plum juice.  It’s really a joy to watch the ways in which Mother Nature toys with our abilities to enjoy great product.  Tomatoes and stone fruit show no signs of slowing down with this barrage of heat we’ve recently experienced.  Unfortunately, the other side of that coin is that many gentler crops are suffering in the heat, namely arugula, spinach, and some edible flowers.  All of which have taken a hit in the past week and decreased in volume.  Let’s not focus on the negative and instead turn our interests to all the wonderful products we do have.

I ate a black splendor plum from Terry Ranch yesterday, and it was perhaps the best piece of stone fruit I have eaten this season.  Lacking most of the tannins in the skin, it was pure joy to indulge in the juicy dark flesh.  Peaches from Regier this week are now free-stones which will make it easier for all your pastry/consumptive needs.  Summer squash is showing up in all sorts of different shapes, colors, and sizes, including the baby varieties that Weiser had on it’s table yesterday.  Corn is here, and our friends at Fruit First Farm have it in abundance.  Both Weiser and Munak brought melons this week.  Munak had their Rocky Sweet’s, a favorite of my daughter, and Weiser had several varieties, so we decided to bring in mix boxes to stock.  Heirloom tomatoes have brought their volume to the market.  Munak and Tutti Frutti have beautiful deep red varieties currently.  While Sungold tomatoes are still limited, we are making in-roads to secure more each week, so please make sure to get your pre-orders in ASAP!  Coleman Family Farm is still bringing in some of the most pristine lettuces and more marginal greens like their fragrant Anise Hyssop, or beautiful sage flowers.

We have so much more to share.  Please click on our availability list, and if there’s any questions about something we perhaps missed, or something you’re looking for, just reach out and send us an email.  We’re happy to talk about the farmers market and all that we can provide you with as another resource in your Worldwide Produce Team.  Have a great rest of your day!
