Farmers Market Update, 09.12.24

Last week I spoke on the heatwave and now we’re dealing with the oncoming fall cold nights.  The temperatures are dropping at night and killing off basil crops, so we’ll start to see a few limitations on some leafy greens moving forward.

Peaches as well have begun their decline.  While we expect yellow Peaches through the end of the month, white Peaches are likely done next week.  We still have a decent volume coming from the pluots, but it might be time to start switching to the emerging apples and pears or jujube’s if you’re looking at menu writing.

This year hasn’t been great for Nardello production as we’re normally knee deep in their red glory, but hopefully we’ll see more great peppers for a few more weeks.  Melons are still going strong through the end of the month as well, and their flavor is impeccable.  The cruciferous family decided to join the party this past week as we saw lots of Romanesco and cauliflower emerge.  Brussels sprouts and artichokes are beginning to gain volume as well.  2 Peas in a Pod had some beautiful butter beans and Christmas Lima Beans this week, with a decline in their berries due to the last heat strike.  Several farms experience a gap in fields and production due to that heat, but it looks like we’re getting back on board and ready to take your orders for all that you may want next week.  With Fall right around the corner, the winter squash is just begging to be ordered.  From Red Kuri to honeynut, and everything in between, the hard squash needs a place on your menu.

Please remember that we are here to help you get what you need from the Santa Monica Farmers Market on either Wednesday’s or Saturday’s.  Whether you need 6bu of Lovage from Coleman Family Farms, or 10 cases of Oranges for juicing from Polito Farms, we will make it happen for you!  Have a great rest of your day!
