Item of the Week: Prosciutto Crudo Italiano Bora ~13lb (See SPECIALS) |
Tomato
Report: This week the Market went crazy. Prices went dramatically higher. Because of the recent storms in Mexico. Weather greatly affected almost entire Tomato market. Cherry Tomatoes doubled in price. Roma, Grape, and Teardrop also went up. Large size 4x4 and 4x5 took a big price increase and have limited availability. The only great pricing that still remains are Heirloom Tomatoes. (See This Week's Hot Sheet) |
|
Lettuce
Report: Iceberg: Average supplies are expected thru the week and the prices are firming. Good quality and availability. Head sizes have increased. Romaine yields have dropped significantly due to hot weather. Expect lighter weights. Green and Butter Leaf Lettuces will have a very light supply this week. Heat has diminished yields; expect to see lighter weights on Green between 22-24 lbs. Red Leaf has better availability.

Berry
News: Recent bad weather in the Oxnard and Watsonville growing areas had a negative impact on the market. Quality is hit or miss on Blueberries and better on Blackberries. Strawberries still have good quality but prices have increased. Hot days and Cold nights have been affecting yield and quality on most all berries. However, Raspberries managed to escape any quality issues. They remain the best buy. Raspberries continue to have great quality and good pricing. |
Fruit
Report:
Citrus; Grapefruit and Oranges are all in good supply. We will continue to buy just California product which is better and slightly more expensive than the imported brands. Lemons and Limes have been having quality issues and prices are dramatically on the rise. Limes will have some yellowing due to weather issues, but these varieties are from Mexico. New crop of Lemons on the way from the Inland desert growing areas. Stone Fruit: Great supply of Peaches, Plums, Pluots and Nectarines. Availability and pricing great for Menus!!!! Apricots ,Cherries and Pomegranates: These are now all out of season and quality is hit or miss while prices are extremely high. Best to stay away if possible. Melons: Cantaloupes have good pricing and good sugar levels. Honeydew has good availability and pricing. The sugar content is great. Watermelon pricing is good(See Hot Sheet). Grapes: California's Central Valley has all colors of Grapes available. Berry size is still showing mixed but we are starting to see improvement. Large berry sizes are at a premium this season. Currently Princess, Thompson, Flame, Red Globe, Crimson and Black Seedless are available . Apples: A new crop of Gala, Golden Delicious, and Red Delicious apples are now available from Eastern Washington. Granny Smith should be available in early October. |
Vegetable
Report: Asparagus: Prices have come down, and all sizes have availability. Peruvian products are available and on the increase. We will have primarily Mexican product. Bell Peppers: Prices are on the rise for green bell peppers because of weather conditions. Prices higher but quality is good. Another good choice are Red bells, however they have gone up in price as of late. Squash: Getting supply from Santa Maria. Zucchini prices are good with good quality. Broccoli and Cauliflower: The effects of recent inclement weather have had a more immediate impact . Because of this Crowns are priced at a premium compared to Bunched Broccoli; which are in good supply. Cauliflower and Broccoli both have fair quality and adequate availability . Potatoes: Idaho and Russet Baker are high priced due to higher demands and lower availability (especially the larger variety). Supplies are limited to late season storage potatoes; expect prices to ease once Washington crop produces higher yields and Norkotah Idaho crop transitions. Celery: Prices are on the rise and demand is increasing due to pressures from customers in the east. Carrots: Good supply with competitive pricing. Onions: Yellow supplies and pricing are firming.(See this week's Hot Sheet) Red and White prices are moderate; as well as supplies. Green Onions still remain with stable prices and availability. Corn: Prices have increased on both the Yellow and White variety. |
As with
all fresh fruits and vegetables, the market could change
daily . . .
